Uno stretto  passaggio, di appena  40  metri,   separa  Eubea  dal resto della  Grecia, in  esso, la corrente  marina corre ad una  velocità che  a volte  raggiunge  le  8  miglia  per  ora. Ma la cosa  strana non è tanto la velocità, ma il  fatto  che  ogni  6  ore, la corrente prima rallenta e poi ricomincia a correre  nella  direzione  opposta. Questo  andirivieni va avanti da  migliaia  di  anni, senza  mai  fermarsi. E' il famoso  passaggio di  Euripo   80  km. a  Nord  di  Atene, studiato  da  molti  saggi  sia  dell' antichità che dei  tempi  moderni, arrivando  alla  conclusione  che  si  tratta di un  fenomeno di  maree  dovuto  all' attrazione  lunare. Su  Euripo, un ponte  mobile per  il  passaggio  delle  navi, collega l'isola  alla  terraferma e, dietro al ponte, la  bellissima  città  di  Calcide, Capoluogo  dell' Eubea, da  al  paesaggio  il  suo  tono  particolare. Sulla  destra  e  sulla  sinistra, oltre  lo  sguardo  umano, si  stende  l' oblunga  isola, la cui  lunghezza  è  più  di  175   km. Evia (Eubea) è montuosa, con molto  verde e con improvvisi  cambiamenti  di  paesaggi. All' interno  montagne  piene di  pini ed  abeti, con  pittoreschi  villaggi  aggrappati sui  loro  pendii, burroni con platani e castagni, nei quali scorrono  corsi d' acqua fresca e pulita, fertili valli  piene di  frutteti. Coste  fuori  dalla portata dei  venti con meravigliose  spiagge  sabbiose,  ma  anche  nude  rocce  sbattute dalle onde  dell' Egeo. Pittoreschi  porticcioli  di pescatori, e moderne  istallazioni  turistiche che  soddisfano  i voleri  dei  visitatori. A Nord di  Eubea, si allungano  le Sporadi. Intorno ad Eubea, oltre  a Petalii, vi è un  gran numero  di  grandi e piccole  isole  rocciose, delle  quelli  ne  menzioneremo  55 . Di  tutte sono  10  isole  abitate.
EUBOEA  . A  narrow  channel only  40  meters  wide  separates  Euboea  from  mainland  Greece. Between them is a  sea current than  frequently  reaches  speeds  of  8  miles an  hours. The strange  thing is not the  speed  but  that every  six  hours the  current direction. This  back  and  forth  movement  has  gone on  for  thousands of years  non  stop. This is the  famous  strait of  Evripos, 80 km. north of  Athens, which  many ancient  sages  as well as  modern-day researchers have studied, finally  conluding it is a tidal phenomenon caued  by  the  moon ' s attraction. There is a drawbridge  over  Evripos  which  opens to  let  the  boats  pass  through and  connects  th  island to the  mainland  by road. Beyond the  bridge is the  lovely of  Chalkida, the  capital of  Euboea, which lends its own  special  tone  to  the  landscape. Right  and  left, further  than the eye  can  see, this long,narrow  island  stretches  for  more  than   175   km. Euboea  is mountainous with  abundant flora and  its  landcape  features  abrupt  changes.  Very  hilly in its interior it is  also  full of  firs  and  pines  with  picturesque  villages  clinging to the  slopes, ravines  choked  with plane  and  chestnut  trees  and  murmuring  streams, folowed  by  fertile  plains  covered  in  fruit  trees. There are  leeward  shores  with  gorgeous  sand  beaches, but alsosteep  cliffs  battered  by  the  waves  of  the  Aegean, quaint  fishing  harbours  but  also  modern  tourist  instllations  to  satisfy  any  whim a  visitor  might  have. North  of  Euboea  are the  Sporades, an island  complex. There is a latge  number of  small islands besides  the  Petalioi  islands and  rocky outcroppings  of  which  we  mention a total  of   55, giving  their special  mark. Of  these, including  Euboea  itself, only  9  are  inhabited. Euboea is  the  second largestisland in  Greece ( after  Crete ) and the  sixth  largest  in  the  Mediterranean. It lies northeast of  mainland  Greece  with  which it forms  two  large  gulfs: the  north and  south  gulfs of  Euboea, joined at the  strait of  Evripos. The  main  products on  Euboea are olive  oil, cereals and  figs. It also produces mineral products, primarily magnesite which is one of the  richest sources of  magnesium.                                                        ISOLA  DI  SPETSES

 Quando parliamo di  SPETSES, mi ricordo sempre di un molo molto alto, con una caffetteria  di fronte, e vecchie e pittoresche case alle spalle. Lo chiamano la Dapia. La Dapia, poì ,discende fino alla banchina ove attraccano le navi. Qui sotto, la strada fa una curva e continua a est. Il mare, la fresca brezza dal nord, a sinistra, e a destra le vecchie e altre palazzine, con le piccole finestre e le pareti saturate dalla salsedine marina. La strada, ci porta, alla fine, al pittoresco antico porto, che ancora oggi, è pieno di navi e di barche. Ci sono molte pittoresche piccole taverne. SPETSES è un'isola con alle spalle una grossa tradizione marinara, come Hydra. Il suo simbolo è la figura di'un'eroina che molto diede nella lotta del  1821  contro i Turchi. E' la leggendaria  Bouboulina che, armate le sue navi, prese d' assedio Nauplio e Monenvasia, e poi, in sella ad un bianco cavalo, fu tra i primi ad entrare a  Tripolitsa, liberandola dalla tirannia  turcha.

Piena di pinete,l'isola si trova all'entrata del  Golfo Argolico, appena  1,7  m.n. dalle coste del Peloponneso. La superficie è di  22  kmq. con una popolazione di circa  4.000 abitanti. Vi sono buone infrastrutture turistiche, quindi in estate dà il benvenuto a molti villeggianti, principalmente  Ateniesi che vengono a godersi la calma delle spiagge o per vivere la  tensione della vita notturna. A Spetses si arriva dal  Pireo (52 m.n.) con i traghetti o con gli aliscafi. Ci si può arrivare anche via terra, fino alla vicina costa del Pelponneso,ma poi bisogna lasciare  la macchina perché la circolazione delle auto private è vietata sull'isola. Da Spetses, si possono raggiungere, sia con i vaporetti che con gli aliscafi, Hydra, Poros, Methana, Egina, Ermioni, Porto Cheli, Leonidio Kyparrisia, MMonenvasia e ,nel periodo  estivo, anche Tolo e Nauplio.

 FAMILIARIZZIAMO  CON  L'ISOLA.

 SPETSES ,il capoluogo dell'omonima isola,si trova sulla costa nord est, di fronte al Peloponneso. La piazza di Dapia, di fronte al porto,è molto imponente. Ci sono ancora vicino ai piccoli tavoli della caffetteria, i cannoni usati nella rivoluzione  del  1821.Dietro alla piazza, c'è la casa della Bouboulina. Vale la pena di visitare il Museo ed alcuni vecchi Monasteri che sono stati restaurati, e che ci ricordano vecchi splendori. Vale anche la pena di fare una visita  alla Cattedrale di Agios Nikolaos ed alla chiesa di Agii Pantes e Panagia. Per quanto riguarda le meravigliose spiagge dell'isola,che sono raggiungibili con i battelli, vi rammentiamo VRE'LLOS e ZOGERIA'S sulla costa nord dell'isola, dove i pini abbracciano letteralmente il mare,e le baie d Agia Paraskevi e di Agii Anargyroi, con meravigliose spiagge sabbiose sulla costa sud ovest.Le spiagge di Kounopitsa e di Agia Marina, non sono lontane dal porto. A sud di Spetses c'è la verde isoletta  privata di  SPETSOPOU'LA.

SPETSES

 Mention of Spetses always brings to mind the image of its high harbour wall, the cafès in front and the old pictursque houses behind. This is Dapia, as it is caled, from which the visitor goes down to the pier where the boats tie up. The   road down makes a turn and continues to the east. You have the sea and a brisk northerly breeze on your left and the lofty old mansions with their little windows and their salt-encrusted walls on your right. This road brings you out finally at the picturesque ancient harbour, which even today is full of various craft and is the place to fin quaint  fish tavernas. Spetses is an island with a geat seafaring tradition, lke Hydra. Its symbol is the figure of  Boubolina, the legendary woman sea-captain, the heroine who made a major contribution to the uprising against the Turks in 1821. With Spetses as her base,she set out with her vessels to besiege Nafplio and Monemvasia  and latermounted on a white horse, was one of the first to enter Triplitsa when it was freed from the Turkish yoke. Spetses is an island green with pine trees and lies at the entrance to the Argolis Gulf, 1.7 miles from Kosta in the Peloponnese .Its has an area of 22 sq. km. and a population of approximately  4.000. It has a sound tourist infrastructure and thus in summer has many visitors, mostly  Athenians, who come in search of its peaceful beaches by day and its vivid night life. Spetses can be reached every day from Piraeus, a distance of  52  natical miles, both by ferry and by flying dolpin. It is possible to drive as far as Kosta in the Pelponnese, opposite the island, but cars must be left there as they are not permitted on the island. From Spetses you can visit by ship or flying dolphin  Hydra, POros, Aegina and the other stops made along the coast of the  Peloponnese.

  GETTING TO KNOW THE ISLAND

 SPETSES,the captal of the island, is on the north-eastern coast, opposite  Kosta in the  Peloponnese. The square of  Dapia, above the harbour, has great charm. Cannons used in the  War of  Independence of  1821 still stand next to  the cafè  tables. Behind the square is  Bouboulina's  house. It is worth visiting the museum and some of the old mansions which have now been refurbished and are remiscent of the past glory and  wealth of the  island. The cathedral  (St Nicholas) and the churches of  All  Saints and Our  Lady are also worth a visit. Among the attractive beaches which can be reached by caique are  Vrellos and Zonkeria,on the north coast of the island, where  the pines grow on the very  water's edge, and the idyllic bays  of Agia Paraskevi and  Ayioi  Anargyri, both with the fine sandy  beaches, on the south-western coast. Close to the town are the beaches of  Kounoupitsa and  Ayia Marina. South of  Spetses is the green islet of Spetsopoula, which is, however,privately-owned.
